Luciana Musetti is an Entomologist interested in the evolution and classification of egg parasitoid wasps in the family Platygastridae (Hymenoptera). She is also interested in the development and utilization of biodiversity informatics tools to facilitate and expedite the description and documentation of new species. She is a supporter of Open Access (unrestricted access and unrestricted reuse) for all scientific literature. She is leading the effort to upgrade the curatorial status of vasts portions of the collection's holdings, including the beetles, butterflies and moths, cicadas, among others. The standardization and careful documentation of the colection's curatorial process has resulted in a large amount of detailed information on the time, and consequently the cost, of insect collection curation. The preliminary results, based on about 2 years of work, were presented in poster format at the Entomological Society of America and Entomological Collections Network meetings. The results of five years of carefully documented curatorial work will be submitted for publication soon.
She believes in education and mentoring. She offers internships to undergraduate and grad students on curation and collections-based research. She believes in reaching out to the community. She provides guided tours of the collection to all interested and is active on social media. In 2009 she started the collection Facebook page and the collection's Flickr site. In 2013 she started on Twitter and Instagram. In 2014 she started Pinning Block, a blog about the daily life in the Triplehorn Insect Collection. She is now working on making that site a more interactive outreach tool.
In 2016 Luciana was one of the six individuals who received an Outstanding Staff Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State University. In 2017 she was one of the twelve OSU staff honored with the University Distinguished Staff Award.
